Recent research shows that being low socioeconomic status actually shrinks the surface areas of children’s brains. Although this is alarming, implications for policy are significant. We need to redistribute wealth back into the hands of the poor and working poor.

Parents who don’t provide the basic necessities for their kids’ survival can be charged with child neglect. They can even lose their parental rights. What happens to societies who through their economic policies create situations where children and families do not have access to food or adequate shelter?
